Worked it out!
The Comodo security suite, one of the only firewalls I could find that was 64-bit, is incompatible with PowerDVD.
Ive been imaging the drive and installing programs and testing - this time it failed.
Windows help is pretty unhelpful in describing how to restore a system backup! U need to use the windows disk to do it... but it worked flawlessly in the end.
