Black screen when skipping back with live TV

I've been finding that skipping backwards during live TV using the skip back button often resulted in the screen going black for a few seconds and reverting to around the live time. Would get a couple of skips in and then the problem would occur.

A quick google showed that I wasn't the only one.

A few registry entries from http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/p/88321/452112.aspx seem to have solved it:

Simply delete these 2 reg keys and reboot to fix the issue:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Extensibility\Entry Points\{7e7a8710-9e4a-40a3-824a-7b0baf38abcf}]

 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Extensibility\Applications\{a0cd8951-e5b6-4662-9c9c-d56c5b38ca59}]

With luck, it will solve the occasional problem when coming out of S3, where the screen stays black but audio is working ok. Strange.

Backed up the keys, just in case I need to add them back in.

I've an inkling that this started when I fatefully upgraded my ATI Catalyst Control Center for no particular reason. Just goes to show that once you've got a stable system, best to update software with caution. In general, I won't be auto-upgrading anything automatically - even Windows.

  1. actually no. The blank screening is caused by Media Center's MHEG-5 engine. The registry entries just disable the engine, thus resolving the problem of blank screens. On 28 June Freeview started to broadcast its MHEG-5 EPG.
